LOCATION

City of Lethbridge

Project Details

SOLAR PANELS

Tier 1 bifacial photovoltaic solar panels to generate electricity when exposed to the sun’s radiation.

TRACKER SYSTEM

Enhances solar production moving the face of the solar panel to align with the sun as it moves across the sky.

INVERTERS

25 inverters to convert electricity produced by the solar panels from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) for transportation into the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (“AIES”).

COLLECTION SYSTEM

Consists of medium-voltage underground electrical cables connecting the inverters to the transformers.

TRANSFORMERS

Three (3) 3500kVA transformers to step up the voltage to the 13.8kV connection.

CONNECTION

The Project proposes to connect to the City of Lethbridge distribution system by constructing a ~1km 13.8kV connection line from the Chinook 181 substation to the Project boundary on 2 Avenue W.

ACCESS ROAD

An access road will be constructed at the existing approach on 2 Avenue W. Gravel roads are required within the project boundary to construct, operate and maintain the Project.

TEMPORARY LAYDOWN YARD

Located at the southwest corner of the Project site. The temporary laydown yard will be used for offloading equipment and material during delivery to the Project site.

OPERATIONS BUILDING

An approximately 3,000-square foot building will be located on the south end of the Project site. The building will house service and communications equipment for the operation and maintenance of the Project.

NOISE

NU-E retained Motive Acoustics Inc. to conduct a Noise Impact Assessment (NIA) for the Project. The purpose of the NIA is to quantify the predicted cumulative noise levels at residences located within 1,500m from the Project following the methodology set by the AUC Rule 012 Noise Control. The NIA study results outline the noise levels at residences within 1,500m will be within permissible sound levels (PSL).

GLARE

NU-E retained Solas Energy Consulting Inc. (Solas) to conduct a Solar Glare Assessment (SGA) for the proposed Project. The purpose of the SGA is to quantify the potential solar glare hazard for route receptors and observation points at nearby residences following the guidelines set out by the AUC Rule 007. Solas determined that yellow-grade glare is apparent on eight evaluated receptors. The glare only occurs during backtracking, it is possible to mitigate all glare instances by limiting the range of motion of the trackers to five (5) degrees from the horizontal during sunrise and sunset. This mitigation will be implemented using the tracker software, therefore none of the receptors are anticipated to observe glare during normal operation.

Community Benefits

  • Created +50 locally sourced jobs during construction phase

  • Field and supply chain service opportunities for local businesses

  • Municipal tax revenues throughout the life of the Project

  • Nu E is committed to support local community organizations and charities
